AMERICAN PROFESSIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP (Rec. 6.30 p.m.) NEW YORK, May 30. In the quarter-finals of the professional golf championship Sam Snead defeated Ed. Dudley, 1 up; Jimmy Demaret eliminated Craig Wood, 7 and 6; J. Turnesa defeated Ben Hogan, 2 and 1; Byron Nelson defeated Harry Cooper at the 39th. In the semi-finals Turnesa defeated Nelson at the 37th hole and Snead beat Demaret, 3 and 2. QUEEN’S PARK RETAINS HEW AT SHIELD The annual match for the Hewat Shield between the Invercargill and Queen’s Park golf clubs was played at Queen’s Park on Saturday afternoon in sunny, windless weather. The frozen state of many of the greens made approaching and putting extremely difficult. The shield was retained by Queen’s Park, which won 12 matches to Invercargill’s 9.
