CUSTOMS DUTY ON COMFORTS.
—Customs duty of £7OOO was demanded on a consignment of pipe tobacco and cigarettes sent to Australian troops at a battle station in Northern Australia by the Australian Comforts Fund. This complaint was made by the honorary secretary of the fund, Mr C. R. McKerihan, who said the duty had been paid under protest so the tobacco could reach the men quickly. An appeal was being made to the Prime Minister, Mr J. Curtin, for a refund of the money. The Comforts Fund executive considered it was unfair to collect Customs duty on goods for the fighting forces bought out of public donations. (Sydney),
