MUSEUM TRUST BOARD

A statement that keen public interest had been shown in the new Southland Museum was made at the annual meeting of the Southland Museum Trust Board last night. Mr H. C. Gimblett presided over a good attendance of members. The annual report stated that Mr J. H. Sorensen, director of the museum, had left on military duties and Mr David Teviotdale, formerly a member of the staff of the .Otago Museum, had agreed to accept the duty of acting director. The main work of the last year had centred in the re-registration of specimens, their preparation for transportation to the new building and preparation for display. A fine display had been staged for the opening, but it could not be considered to be by any means final or complete. A great deal of work, which would call for a fair amount of expenditure, was required to arrange material not yet on exhibition in an orderly and accessible manner. The year began with a credit balance of £5/13/2 and ended with a credit of £l4/15/10. Donations during the year totalled £328/6/-. Total receipts were £339/8/4 and expenditure £330/5/8. The building fund at the end of March showed a credit balance of £228/10/- and in addition there was .a debenture of £3OO to be paid into the account. The annual report and balance-sheet were adopted. , The following office-bearers were elected. President, the Mayor of Invercargill; vicepresident, Mr W. J. Thomas; honorary secretary, Mr C. B. Tapley; honorary curators, Messrs J. C. Calvert, G. Jaquiery and A. D. Nisbet; building and finance committee, Messrs H. C. Gimblett, J. T. Carswell, C. B. Tapley and W. J. Thomas. A vote of thanks was passed to Miss E. Bellamy, who was an anonymous donor of £lOOO when the fund for the museum building was raised. A vote of thanks was passed to Mr A. D. Nisbet for assistance in preparing the exhibits in the new building. Messrs W. F. Styrman (town clerk), F. M. Corkill (city engineer) and W. Stapleton (superintendent of reserves) were thanked for valuable assistance to the board.
