LOWER PAYMENT FOR CALVES

EFFECT OF NO EXPORT OF VEAL

Because no veal was exported from New Zealand last season the final pay-out by the Southland Calf Pool for calves collected last spring will be less than it was for the previous season. When the calves were collected a preliminary payment of 7/- a head was made compared with 7/6 a head in 1940. A bonus will be announced shortly and will be payable in July, but it is not expected that it will be sufficient to equal the total payment of 11/6 for the 1940 season. A bonus equal to about half that paid last year may be available when the accounts are completed. In the absence of the export of veal such a bonus must be considered very satisfactory. It is reported that there is every prospect of the Southland payment being again the highest in New Zealand.
