SOUTHLAND JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIPS The Southland junior tennis championships for girls and boys under 18 were played at the Waihopai courts on Saturday. The games were played under fair conditions, the court being well sheltered from the strong northerly wind which prevailed during the day. The semi-finals and final in the boys’ games and the final in the girls’ games will be played next Saturday on the Invercargill courts. In the girls’ matches P. Hardy (G.H.S.) and J. Teller (Invercargill) played good tennis, while C, Snow (Waihopai), R. Scandrett (B.H.S.j and Corkery (Marist) were the best players among the boys. Following are the results:— BOYS’ MATCHES First Round—K. Curran (St. Mary’s) beat A. Fisher (Otautau) 9-5; C. Snow (Waihopai) beat D. Crawford (8.H.5.) 9-4; R. Scandrett (8.H.5.) beat B T. Welsh (St. Patrick’s. Gore) 9-7; J. B. Smith (Rugby Park) beat D. Crawford (8.H.5.) 9-6. Second Round—Snow beat Curran 9-5; Scandrett beat Whitaker 9-7; Corkery (St. Mary’s) beat Smith 9-6; R. Millow (Moana) beat E. Walker (8.H.5.) 9-8. GIRLS’ MATCHES First Round— S. Smith (Invercargill) beat M. Ferguson (Tisbury) 9-4; P. Hardy (G.H.S.) beat N. Townsend (Central) 9-6; J. Teller (Invercargill) beat E. Collie (G.H.S.) 9-2; V. Townsend (Central) beat S. Mitchell (Invercargill) 9-8. Semi-Finals—P. Hardy beat S. Smith 9-6; J. Telfcr beat V. Townsend 9-7. REPRESENTATIVE TEAM SELECTED The selectors of the Southland Lawn Tennis Association have chosen the following team to represent the province in the annual interprovincial matches against Otago and South Canterbury to be played next Saturday at Dunedin;— Miss L. Barrett (Invercargill). Mrs G. R. Hanan (Invercargill). Miss K. A. Cutt (Invercargill), Mrs Alexander (Rugby Park), Misses G. Ferguson (Invercargill), R. Horsburgh (Winton), B. Morton (Rugby Park). B. Whelan (Eastern), A. J. Deaker (Invercargill). D. Radford (St_ Mary’s). A. T. Baird (Western). F. Lindsay (Winton), D. Taylor and A. Higgins (Western). Anyone unable to play is to report at once to the secretary. Mr J. H. B. Scholefield. The team will practise at the Invercargill courts on Wednesday evening.
