PATRIOTIC FLOWER DISPLAY There was an outstanding display of many varieties of blooms at the flower show held in the Gore R.S.A. club rooms on Friday in aid of the soldiers parcels fund. The Mayor of Gore (Mr W. D. Shelton) declared the show officially open and congratulated those responsible for such a fine display. EMERGENCY TEST.— A comprehensive test of the emergency services of the town was carried out under conditions as closely resembling those of an air raid as possible, and a high degree of efficiency was attained. The portion of the town selected for the test was No. 5 and 6 areas, which is bounded by Ardwick street on the east and Albany and Irving streets on the south. The opportunity was provided to test thoroughly the whole organization under emergency conditions. Minor details were found to be at fault, but the test, taken all over, proved most satisfactory, and the experience gained should prove of great value to all concerned. The co-operation between the wardens and the fire brigade officials was excellent and the whole scheme worked out according to plan. VITAL STATISTICS.— A big decrease in the number of births is shown in the vital statistics for Gore for the month of February compared with the figures for the same month last year. The figures, with last year’s figures for the same month given in parentheses are as follows:—Births 8 (17), deaths 8 (3), marriages 6 (4). COLLECTION OF RATES.— Today is the last day for the payment of rates levied by the Gore Borofigh Council before the 10 per cent, penalty is added. The response to date has been excellent, £1,064 in current rates having been collected, leaving a total of £ll5B outstanding. It is thought that when the borough office closes this afternoon the amount outstanding will be comparatively small.
