OBITUARY

MR HUGH RANKIN The death has occurred of Mr Hugh Rankin, of Waikaka. Born at County Derry, Ulster, Ireland, on July 14, 1861, Mr Rankin came to the Dominion in the sailing ship British King, landing at Port Chalmers in 1882. He settled in the Waipahi district and was engaged in contract ploughing on the Mount Mistake and Waipahi sheep stations. He then acquired a property of his own, which he farmed until he moved to Waikaka in 1891. There he was engaged on road contracting until the dredging boom broke out, when he managed Grey’s dredge, the first to operate in the district. Later he acquired more land, which he farmed until failing health compelled him to retire. Mr Rankin married the eldest daughter of the late Mr and Mrs R. Scobie, Clinton, and their golden wedding was celebrated almost two years ago. He is survived by his wife, and a family of five daughters and three sons, Miss Mary Rankin (Sydney), Mrs E. Black (Balfour), Mrs A. Gerken (Charlton), Mrs J. Darling (Balclutha), Mrs R. Inder (Dunedin), Messrs Robert Rankin (Ohai), Hugh Rankin (Gore), and George Rankin (Waikaka). Mr Rankin was a member of the Loyal Waikaka Lodge, M.U., 1.0.0. F.
