APPOINTMENT OF DEPUTY FIRE SUPERINTENDENT

Sir, —I noticed in The Southland Times this morning that the Fire Board was going to call nominations in the four main centres for a deputy-super-intendent. Now why? In our own brigade here we have men who know the town and water supply from end to end; also they have had years of practical experience under our worthy retiring deputy, Mr R. A. Robertson. What a help it would be for our new superintendent who has just come from New Zealand’s capital and for quite a while will have to “swot up” the city. I noticed in a report of a send-off in Wellington to our new superintendent the statement that it was a pity for Wellington to lose a man of such ability and so well versed in the city. The Invercargill Fire Board should help our new superintendent and help our city by electing one of the staff of our own brigade. It will not have any regrets. FRANK McMANUS, Sen., ’ Ex-Fireman. January 28, 1941.
