WOOL APPRAISAL COMPLETED

CLIP IN BRIGHT CONDITION

LARGE QUANTITY CATALOGUED

The appraisal of the final catalogue of the January wool valuation was completed yesterday. Because the previous appraisal was held in midDecember, when a catalogue of 13,280 bales was submitted, a surprise was caused when it was found that the total bales catalogued was about 25,000. Broken weather held up shearing until about January 10, after which exceptionally large quantities of wool arrived at sidings. The stores have been working long hours in an endeavour to get as much submitted to the anpraisers as possible. No doubt a few farmers will be disappointed that their wool missed the sale, but as the next appraisal is scheduled for February 21, they will not have long to wait for returns.

LITTLE VARIATION IN PRICES Prices showed little or no variation from those paid at the previous appraisal, although in some cases the heavier condition of the later shorn wool was reflected in the slightly lower prices received, but the growers were recompensed by the Heavier weight clip a sheep. As in past appraisals since the commandeer the catalogue ' contained an increased quantity of Eastern District wools. Growers from that district are appreciating more and more that the Invercargill brokers have nothing to learn from the other centres in the handling and display of wool. The official report issued by the Invercargill Wool Brokers’ Association states: “The wool appraisers arrived in Invercargill on Tuesday and yesterday morning completed valuing. The brokers submitted a catalogue comprising 24,564 bales. The wool was again in excellent order and some good half bred and Corriedale was offered. Messrs Andrew and Dorricott, of Eyre Creek, Five Rivers, topped the appraisal with five bales of halfbred at 19Jd and also secured 17,?d for five bales of Corriedale hogget and the same price for eight bales of Corriedale ewe. A bin lot of super crossbred hogget brought 17a for nine bales. NEED FOR CAREFUL SKIRTING “The importance of careful skirting is again shown in enhanced prices received by growers who gave their clips the attention which is necessary to place their wools in the higher types. One or two lots were rejected by the valuers for carrying excess moisture through being Shorn while damp. Growers are particularly warned to guard against this, as the wool loses - all its lustre, while there is also a danger of spontaneous combustion either in store or while on the carrying vessel. The quantities offered by the individual brokers were as follows:
