The Mayor, Mr J. R. Martin, who underwent an operation in Park Hospital yesterday morning, was reported last evening to be comfortable. Mr W. G. V. Femie, of Christchurch, general manager of the Calder Mackay Company, Ltd., returned to Dunedin by yesterday’s midday express after paying a short visit to Invercargill.

Mr A. E. Dobbie, registrar of the Supreme Court, Invercargill, has resumed duty after his annual leave. Mr P. J. Nash, commercial officer of the Dunedin Post Office, is at present visiting Invercargill on departmental business.

The condition of Mr G. Wraytt, chairman of the Southland County Council, who is at present a patient in the Southland hospital at Kew, is reported to be improving.

Sympathy with the relations of Pilot Officer A. L. Smiley, formerly a member of the engineering staff of the Southland County Council, who is reported to have been killed, was . expressed at a meeting of the council in Invercargill yesterday. Councillors stood in silence as a mark of respect. The Southland Education. Board at its meeting yesterday expressed its congratulations to Mr Howard Hoskins, formerly head master of the Nightcaps District High School, on his appointment to the Auckland inspectorate, and to Mr R. G. Watson, formerly head master of the Gore main school, on his appointment as head master of the new Pasadena Intermediate School, Auckland. Mr G. W. Reid has been appointed a director of ,Ross and Glendining, Ltd., to fill the vacancy caused by the recent death of Mr F. W. Mitchell, of Dunedin. Mr James Anderson, jobbing manager of the Southland Daily News Company, Ltd., who has retired after more than 50 years’ service with the company, was the guest of honour at a function held by the company and staff. In presenting Mr Anderson with a cheque from the directors, Mr J. S. Ferguson, general manager, wished him a long and happy retirement. Mr Ferguson also handed Mr Anderson a letter of appreciation from the managing director, Mr W. J. Jones. On behalf of the staff Mr S. Anderson presented the guest of honour with a set of bowls. Other members of the staff also spoke and Mr Anderson replied.
