NEW CHAIRMAN APPOINTED

City Patriotic Committee

The resignation of Mr W. Grieve from the position of chairman, of the Invercargill Metropolitan Patriotic Committee, was accepted at a meeting of the committee last night. Mr P. L. Hodge, the deputy chairman, was elected to succeed Mr Grieve as chairman. He would be pleased to continue to work for the committee, but because of his appointment to a position in the Army, he would not be able, to carry on as chairman, said Mr Grieve. He thanked the members of the committee for their loyal co-operation and said he was sure that the men overseas would appreciate their work. He thanked the women members especially for the amount of work they had done. “Southland has reason to be proud of its patriotic effort,” said Mr Grieve, and in comparison with other provinces it has done remarkably well.” They had a splendid organization in Invercargill and all the province was well covered. The various committees were doing their work well. * IMPORTANCE OF FUNDS Mr Grieve said he hoped that the public in Southland would realize that the raising of funds for patriotic purposes was a most important part of the war effort. A great deal of the morale of the troops depended on the comforts and amenities provided by patriotic funds. It was also important to make adequate provision for the troops when they returned. It Was essential that the men returned with a good morale otherwise their war effort was wasted. He appealed to the public of Southland to increase their patriotic donations to the utmost. “We will miss his deliberations around this table,” said Mr J. Pickard, when referring to Mr Grieve’s resignation. Mr Grieve had mastered what he considered was a difficult job. On the suggestion of Mr D. W. Stalker, it was decided that a minute be recorded thanking Mr Grievq for his services and that it be forwarded to him. , . Mr Hodge, on assuming the chair, congratulated Mr Grieve on his appointment to the Army and thanked him for' his work as chairman of the committee. He would endeavour to carry on the work as best he could, said Mr Hodge, and he appealed to the public of the province to support the patriotic funds. Mr Pickard was appointed- deputy chairman of the committee.
