THE CLOSE SEASON FOR GODWITS
Sir, —Some time ago it was decided to have a close season for godwits; but since then conditions have changed. These- birds are migratory. They generally arrive in New Zealand about October each year (in poor condition) and depart (fat) at Easter for the North China coasts, where they are killed in thousands. North China is now occupied by the Japanese. Therefore, by protecting the birds we are simply playing into the hands of our enemies, who will probably reap a rich harvest from the game which we have been feeding, and which we are prevented from touching. However, I understand the matter has been referred to tire member for Invercargill, Mr W. M. C. Denham. I hope he will investigate it satisfactorily, and do what he can to have the season reopened for, say, six weeks from February 15. LICENCE HOLDER.
