SHELTER TRENCHES
Sir,—Permit me to make a suggestion to the authorities responsible for the planning and excavating of existing and future trenches in and around the city. During the recent wet weather the lead into, and bottom of, these trenches were a sea of slippery waterlogged clay, almost impossible of foothold and ruinous to clothes in the event of a race for shelter by men, women and children. With millions of tons of sand at our back-door (Oreti beach), would it not be possible to have a couple of inches of sand put along the base of all trenches and future shelters? Anyone I have mentioned the matter to has been in absolute agreement and has been willing to help do the job. In Dunedin they have timber grating, but sand would be less expensive. The suggestion is therefore made for what it is worth. E.P.S. WORKER.
