WANAKA STATION AT AUCTION
RETAINED IN SARGOOD FAMILY
One of the oldest and best-known sheep stations in the south, Wanaka Station, part of which was owned by Sir Percy Sargood and part by Lady Sargood, was offered at auction at Dunedin by Dalgety and Co., Ltd. Sir Percy Sargood’s property was put up for auction first, and after the bidding had started at £6500, was sold to Mrs Stewart D. Macpherson for £7lOO. Lady Sargood’s property was passed in, as no bids were received. Wanaka Station, therefore, remains in the Sargood family. Lying on the western shores of Lake Wanaka, the station is one of the most picturesque runs in Otago. The homestead area, which was owned by Sir Percy Sargood, contains approximately 1326 acres of freehold land. Sir Percy bought the station from Mr Robert Turnbull in 1912, and placed part of it in his own name and the remaining area of 1334 acres in Lady Sargood’s name. At present, there is no homestead on the station. Twice the beautiful home near the shores of the lake was burned to the ground. The station is extensively irrigated, as Sir Percy took a great interest in irrigation schemes in Central Otago. There was only a small attendance at the sale, and bidding was not brisk, but the offering at auction of such a valuable property caused considerable public interest, particularly in Central Otago districts.
