OBITUARY

MR DAVID STEWART Mr David Stewart, of Gore, whose death occurred suddenly at Mataura on Monday, was born at Sandstone, Riversdale, 63 years ago, being the second son of the late Mr David Stewart, of Riversdale and Gore. Mr Stewart received his education at Riversdale and Gore, and on leaving school he worked with his father on the latter’s farm at Croydon for a few years. He th e» entered the building trade as an apprentice to the late Mr A. Hartley, of Gore, remaining at this work for a considerable time. Later he was in partnership with Mr W. Shore. He then joined the staff of the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, Ltd., but he later returned to the building trade, working on his own account.

Mr Stewart kept abreast of modern architecture and the high standard of his workmanship made his services in keen demand. He erected many fine buildings in the Gore district, besides a number in Northern Southland and others as far away as Moa Flat. Mr Stewart carried on his trade for 35 years. He had few recreations throughout his life, devoting his time almost exclusively to the various branches of his work. He married Miss Anne Kennedy, a daughtei' of the late Mr and Mrs John Kennedy, of Gore. He is survived by his wife and one son, Mr Ivan Stewart, who is at present undergoing training in a military camp. MR R. W. McKINNEL The death of Mr Robert Wilson McKinnel occurred at Gore on Saturday at the age of 78. Mr McKinnel was bom in 1863 at Wairuna, where his parents, the late Mr and Mrs John McKinnel, were among the first settlers. About 1869 Mr McKinnel moved to Waikaia with his parents and he received his education at the Switzers school. Later he worked with his father in a butchery business in the township. While still v*ry young Mr McKinnel took up mustering and shepherding, and for the remainder of his life he followed this occupation. He was first employed in the Lakes district, and later he returned to Waikaia to work on Glenaray Station, where he remained for 11 years. He then went to Moa Flat Station, and for 23 years he worked there as a shepherd and musterer. About 21 years ago he went to Roxburgh to assist his brother in the management of a run, and after 11 years there he went to Christchurch to enter into retirement. Five years ago Mr McKinnel came to Gore where he lived up to the time of his death. One of his main hobbies was collie dog trials.

Mr McKinnel did not marry and he is survived by five brothers, Messrs John McKinnel (Gore), Samuel McKinnel (Waikaia), Walter McKinnel (Roxburgh), Thomas McKinnel (Waikaia), and James McKinnel (Invercargill), and four sisters, Mesdames J. Thompson L. Muir (Gore), A. Christie and G. Smith (Kaikoura). MR ANDREW SOUTAR

(Rec. 6.30 p.m.) LONDON, Nov. 25. The death has occurred of Mr Andrew Soutar, the novelist. He was born in 1879. He travelled extensively in the Near and Far East, Spain, Portugal \and America. In the last war he served in the Royal Air Force.
