SENIOR CRICKET GAMES

FIRST CENTURY OF SEASON

Completely mastering Bluff’s bowling, C. Johnson (Invercargill) scored the first century of the Southland Cricket Association’s season on Saturday. Johnson hit freely all round the wicket, scoring two 6’s and seven 4’s. He accounted for 100 of his team’s total of 159. Two other good scores were put up during the afternoon. Playing for Old Boys against Appleby-Railway, J. C. Scandrett knocked up a bright 87, while the veteran A. J. Hamilton, compiled the good total of 43 playing for Union against Marist. Bluff replied to Invercargills total of 159 with 53 in its first innings and 55 for one wicket in its second. Williamson (16) was top-scorer for Bluff in the first innings and in the second, Mclvor (not out) 25 and Williamson (not out) 20, were the best scorers. The averages of Bluff’s bowlers suffered as the result of Johnson’s good form, no fewer than seven being tried in an effort to dislodge him.

Old Boys put Union at the top of the competition ladder by beating Appleby-Railway. For Old Boys, Scandrett scored 87, S. Richardson 27, D. Hamilton 18, and G. Agnew 15. The tail-enders of the combined team failed to make a stand and its innings closed at 129 in reply to Old Boys 179.

By beating Marist by 68 runs on the first innings Union obtained its third win of the season. Marist batted first and compiled 54, top-scorer being J. O’Brien (18). Union replied with 122, 43 coming from A. J. Hamilton and 20 from J. Thomson. Thomson was the most successful bowler of the match, taking five wickets for 17 runs. Marist was playing under a handicap in that it was able to field only three senior players, the rest of the team comprising junior B and school boy cricketers.
