CHILDREN ASKED TO COLLECT ERGOT

(P.A.) WELLINGTON, November 22.

The Minister of Education, the Hon. H. G. R. Mason, has issued a statement asking school children to collect all the ergot they can during December and January. There is a great shortage in the United Kingdom and New Zealand is wanted to supply as many tons as possible. Ergot contains alkaloids that have great value, especially in stopping bleeding. The most valuable type is found on marram grass and tall fescue. Many tons of first-class quality go to waste in New Zealand every summer.

The Department of Agriculture is organizing the drive and is asking the Education Department to encourage children to collect ergot during the two months in which it ripens. Arrangements have been made by which grain and seed merchants will buy it from children at 3d to 6d an ounce cash, according to quality.
