IMPRESSMENT OF VEHICLES
Procedure In Event Of Mobilization
The Commissioner of Transport, Mr G. L. Laurenson, who is also Chief Controller of Transport under the Emergency Regulations, visited Invercargill yesterday morning and met the district controller, Mr G. Hewton, and his advisory committee. ! Mr Laurenson outlined to the com- < mittee the procedure for the impressment of vehicles, and said that lists were being prepared by the district controller and his committee of vehicles that would be required by the Army and the Emergency Reserve in the event of mobilization in New Zealand. Persons who received notice of impressment should realize that their vehicles would be impressed only in the event of such an emergency. Although the right of appeal to the district Transport Licensing Authority is provided for, it is not expected that there will be any appeals because the transport will be required only in circumstances in which everyone will be willing to do everything in his power to assist the country. The advisory committee is representative of all users of transport and will take every care to ensure that vehicles are allocated to the various purposes in such a manner as to cause the least possible disruption to essential services. Where transport is taken away for Army purposes in" the event of mobilization, prompt payment will be made for the vehicles. The lists, when prepared, will be sent to the Chief Controller for approval. The vehicles will then be inspected by the transport inspection department and, if suitable, an impressment notice will be served.
