TIDEWAITER WINS WELL Success Of T. J. Boyle (Special) WELLINGTON, October 25. RIMU HURDLES— Tidewaiter won the Riinu Hurdles with a solid finishing run. He was always fairly handy and, jumping well, he moved forward on the turn. He was on terms with Great Quex and Master Lackham at the last fence and once over he proved much the better stayer. Master Lackham just headed Great Quex out of second money. TRIAL STAKES.— Good Scout and Renarde staged a thrilling finish to the Trial Stakes, the latter getting in the last stride. The start was very poor; in a snap despatch many of the runners had no chance. Theatre jumped away with a clear lead and on being joined by Drake’s Drum carried on from Dash o’ Dublin, Hikorangi, High Morale, Gay Dancer and Good Scout, on the fence. Good Scout and Dash o’ Dublin came on well and at the distance Renarde put in a claim on the inside of Good Scout. These two drew away to fight out the finish and Renarde just got up on the line. WELLINGTON GUlNEAS— Salutation showed definite superiority against those of her own age in the Wellington Guineas. Premature took up the running from Foreign Coin, Salutation, Aqueduct. Burra Sahib and Monetary. Burra Sahib had charge at the distance but Salutation finishing on the inner got on terms in the last 100 yards and outstayed him in the run to the post. Corn Prince was a poor third. HERETAUNGA HANDICAP— The Greenwood colours were again carried to victory, this time in the hack distance event, by Bascule, who is from the Te Kara family. He put in his claim on the outer to win going away from Phyto, who stayed a little better than the pacemaker, Ackemma. KARITANE HANDICAP— Damask. the favourite, was never a possibility and finished a bad fourth. The race was won practically throughout by Palora. The only time she was headed was briefly at the end of a furlong by Actors, but the latter soon went back and Palora led into the straight from Foreign Princess and Dominate. Dominate drew up on the inner and got on terms in the last 100 yards, but he just failed, Palora sticking on a trifle too well. WATKINS HANDlCAP— Wardress was responsible for an outstanding effort in the Watkins Handicap. She began well and occupied a handy position till the five furlongs, when she suddenly went back to the’ rear. Approaching the straight she had moved forward again on the fence and just as The Monarch had taken over from Beau Ciel, Kotua and Happy Ending, Wardress put in her claim. Night Pilot drew one of the outside positions, but he began well and was prominent in the running throughout until he reached the false rail, where some of the horses inside him bore out and he I was the last to get the bump, which knocked him right off his balance and cost him any chance he may have had. AWATEA HANDICAP— Augment put up a consistent performance to improve on his third on the first day and win the Awatea Handicap decisively. Saxon Tor went into the lead at the false rail, with Autolite holding her position, but in the last furlong Augment challenged and gradually drew away. Boswell came with a solid run wide out to cut down Saxon Tor. BELMONT HANDlCAP— Cheddington, the favourite for the concluding event, had every chance running near the leaders to the straight, but he weakened to fifth in the run home. The race was won' well by Egyptian Rose—the first double winner of the meeting. Wild Fox finished well, but she ran In and had to be checked or she would have made it harder for the winner. CANTERBURY REHANDICAPS (P.A.) PALMERSTON NTH., Oct. 26. The following rehandicaps have been declared for the Canterbury meeting: New Zealand Cup: Gladynev 8.11, Wardress 8.1. Stewards’ Handicap: Kentucky 9.6, Hearth 9.2.
