V.C. WINNER MAY BE SAFE

SERGEANT-PILOT WARD PRISONER OF WAR? BROADCAST FROM GERMANY Sergeant Pilot James Allen Ward, V.C., reported missing believed killed, may be alive, and a prisoner of war in Germany. His brother-in-law, Mr S. H. Mayne, of Christchurch, has substantial reasons to believe this. Ward’s name is reported to have been read over the German radio among a list of prisoners. Mr E. V. Etwell, a radio enthusiast, was listening to Germany about 10 p.m. on a Saturday a few weeks ago, and a list of prisoners was read. There was one name of which all Mr Etwell heard was “ Allen Ward, street, Wanganui, New Zealand.” The next was a Christchurch man, Mr Turner, of 363 Worcestei- street. Mr Etwell was able to inform his parents that he was safe. After Mr Mayne heard of this, two other people told him that they had heard the name of Sergeant Pilot Ward, one not realizing that it would be the V.C. He now hopes to hear from anyone else who heard the announcement.
