TERMS PASSES AT UNIVERSITY

SOUTHLAND STUDENTS SHARE SCHOLARSHIP Two Invercargill students will probably share the George Young Scholarship awarded at the University of Otago. They are Miss E. M. Swinney and W. R. Mayhew. Their names have been submitted to the University Council. The scholarship is awarded annually to the student in any faculty with the best record both in class work and degree examinations during the years of study. Miss Elsie Swinney is a daughter of Mr and Mrs R. Swinney, Arthur street. She was dux of the Southland Girls’ High School in 1938 and showed a special aptitude for mathematics. She is taking a science course at the university. W. R. Mayhew is a son of Mr and Mrs W. R. Mayhew, Rugby street. He was dux of the Southland Boys’ High School. His examination results at the university have been consistently high. In his first year he won the Gilray Memorial Prize for English. The following are the results for former students of the Southland Technical College, Southland Boys’ High School, Southland Girls’ High School and Gore High School (excluding B.A. and B.Ss. subjects at stage I) of the terms examinations in the arts, science, music, commerce and mining faculties.
