The Minister of Finance, the Hon. W. Nash, arrived in Sydney yesterday. He will have talks with the Federal Cabinet and with Air Chief Marshal Sir Robert Brooke-Popham, Commander-in-Chief in the Far East. Mr P. C. Watson, who has been appointed chief traffic inspector at the head office of the Transport Department, was for a number of years traffic inspector to the Southland County Council. He secured a position with the Transport Department about four years ago. Mr W. J. Morrell, chancellor of the University of Otago, and Mr L. D. Ritchie, vice-chancellor, have been reappointed as the University Council’s delegates on the Senate of the University of New Zealand for a further term of three years. Mr F. Young, of Alexandra, is visiting Gore. Captain F. J. G. Warren, wharfinger at Westport, has been transferred to Dunedin, as wharf superintendent, and Captain P. E. Ryan, master of the company’s motor-vessel Karu, has been appointed wharfinger at Westport. Captain W. J. King, wharf superintendent for the Union Steam Ship Company, Ltd., at Dunedin, has retired from the company’s service, having reached the retiring age. He was born in Dunedin on October 1, 1876, and at an early age went to sea in sailing .ships. He was appointed to his first command, the Flora, on September 24, 1910, and he afterwards commanded the Rakanoa, Koromiko, first Komata, Kowhai, Corinna, Hauroto, and Tarawera, and for short periods was temporarily in command of the Moeraki, Warrimoo, and Maitai. In 1911 Captain King was brought ashore to head office, then at Dunedin, to take up the appointment of acting assistant marine superintendent and in 1914 was appointed assistant marine superintendent. He occupied this position when the company’s head office was transferred from Dunedin to Wellington early in January 1922 and remained there until June 1924, when, at his own request, he was transferred to Dunedin as wharf superintendent.
