SUCCESSFUL TOURNAMENT AT NIGHTCAPS A high standard of boxing was shown at a tournament held by the Nightcaps Boxing Club, assisted by the Southland Boxing Association, in the Nightcaps Town Hall on Saturday night. The hall was well filled and although in a few classes the entries were poor, the contests were full of excitement. Mr W. J. Sycamore, of Invercargill, acted as referee, and Messrs G. Spencer and G. McEwan, of Invercargill, were the judges. The announcer was Mr A. Prendeville. The following were the results: — Lightweight.—M. Taylor (Ohai) 9.9 beat Ballintine (Invercargill) 9.9, on points; M. Taylor beat J. Cook (Nightcaps) 9.0, on points; A. Griffith (Nightcaps) 9.12 beat E. Nicholson (Nightcaps) 9.7, on a technical knock-out in the first round; G. Griffith outpointed G. Hillstead (Invercargill) 9.9; K. Barnsfield (Nightcaps) 9.6 lost to E. Nicholson (Nightcaps) 9.7, in the first round. Novice Bantamweight.—R. Ross (Invercargill) 8.8 beat Haggart (Gore) 8.7, on points; T. Taylor (Ohai) 8.7 outpointed A. Forbes (Gore) 8.9. Final: Taylor beat A. Haggart. Paperweight.—E. Harper (Invercargill) 6.2 beat J. Mclntosh (Mataura) 6.4; R. McLeod (Mataura) 6.7 beat J. Ogilvie (Invercarglil) 6.2. Final: R. McLeod beat E. Harper, on points. Light-heavyweight.—R. Woods (Invercargill) 12.2 beat L. Baird (Nightcaps) 12.0, on a technical knock-out. Welterweight.—Booth (Nightcaps) 10.4 beat Murphy (Invercargill) 10.2, on points; J. Booth (Nightcaps) 10.6 beat J. Robb (Nightcaps) 11.7, on points. Flyweight Novice.—C. Nolan (Gore) 7.6 beat R. Lambert (Nightcaps) after an extra round; Hickey (Gore) 7.7 beat Blight (Ohai) 7.10. Heavyweight Novice.—R. Duff (Nightcaps) 12.12 beat W. Scully (Invercargill) 12.10, on a technical knockout. Middleweight.—G. Wright (Invercargill) 11.8 beat R. King (Invercargill) 11.9 on points. SPECIAL BOUTS L. Bolger (Mataura) 10.10 beat E. Ryan (Nightcaps) 11.6. Ryan looked a winner on points but on a backward move stepped too near the ropes and fell among the spectators. He could not come back. J. Prendeville (Nightcaps) beat J. King (Winton) on points. G. Patterson (Mataura) 5.4 drew with R. Malcolm (Nightcaps) 5.4. G. Monaghan (Mataura) 9.6 beat D. Wilson (Invercargill) 9.8 on points. L. Neylon (Nightcaps) 9.9 beat A. Fleming (North Island) 9.10, on points.
