AUXILIARY WORKERS
TRAINING SCHEME GIVES SATISFACTION (P.A.) WELLINGTON, August 26. The most gratifying feature of the operations of the Dominion Auxiliary Workers’ Training Council is the satisfaction of the employers generally with the skill of the trainees,” said the Minister of Labour (the Hon. P. C. Webb) today. The Minister said that in addition to the training undertaken in the engineering, footwear and building industries assistance had been given to firms manufacturing equipment for the changeover from butter to cheese by training soldiers and a scheme was being developed to train workers in further branches of the metal trade such as the following: mill operatives, machine and floor moulders. The labour requirements for firms holding munition contracts had been met and plans were well advanced for training carpenters. It was hoped to start the first class for potential carpenters in Wellington during the next fortnight. In general it could safely be claimed that those employers who required the services of auxiliary workers had been particularly pleased with the skill which the men had attained after a relatively brief full-time course of intensive training.
