Mr J. G. Young, Director-General of the Post and Telegraph Department, was a visitor to Invercargill for the opening of the new Chief Post Office yesterday.
Mr Justice Tyndall and Messrs A. L. Monteith and W. Cecil Prime arrived in Invercargill by the afternoon express yesterday for sittings of the Court of Arbitration.
Mr H. Miller, formerly chief postmaster at Invercargill and now chief postmaster at Dunedin, was present at the opening of the new Chief Post Office in Invercargill yesterday. Advice has been received by Mrs J. H. Hall, Wellington, from friends in Switzerland, that her husband, Captain J. H. Hall, previously reported missing, is a prisoner of war in Germany. Captain Hall, who is a son of Mr and Mrs Andrew Hall, of Edendale, went overseas as official war correspondent, but resigned that post to become public relations officer with the New Zealand forces.
Among the passengers due to arrive at Auckland by the Pacific Clippex’ on Thursday afternoon is the Rt. Hon. J. G. Coates, who has concluded his special mission to the United States on behalf of the New Zealand Government. The Clipper, which arrived at Honolulu from San Francisco yesterday morning, carries 14 passengers. The Rev. C. J. Tocker, of Invercargill, is at present visiting Queenstown. He will return to the city on Saturday. Mr A. Mewton has been appointed the representative of the Southland section of the Public Service Association on the Invercargill Metropolitan Patriotic Committee. Mi- Mewton was welcomed to the committee at a meeting last evening.
Mr Herbert Everett has been selected by the Auckland West executive of the National Party as candidate fox- the general election. For the past two years he has been chief executive officer of the Allied Motor Traders’ Association in Auckland. In 1931 and 1935 he contested the Nelson seat as a Coalition candidate against Mx - H. Atmore, M.P.
The selection of a former M.P. for Waikato, Mr Robert Coulter, of Te Arolia, as the Labour candidate for the Raglan seat at the general election has been confirmed by the New Zealand Labour Party. The seat is at present held by the Hon. W. Lee Martin, who will not contest the election.
