MAGISTRATE’S COURT

WEDNESDAY (Before Mr R. C. Abernethy, S.M.) Andrew Allan McKenzie was sentenced to three months’ imprisonment with hard labour’ for being intoxicated while in charge of a motor-vehicle on the Invercargill-Riverton Highway. On a charge of driving without a licence he was disqualified from obtaining another for three years and thereafter until the court, upon application made aft®.- expiration of the period, ordered the removal of the disqualification. Senior Sergeant W. T. Kelly conducted the prosecution and Mr L. F. Moller appeared for the defendant. McKenzie pleaded not guilty to the first charge and guilty to the second. Eric Vernon Brooks was fined 7/6, costs 10/-, for riding a bicycle without lights. Vivian Charles Rose was fined £2, costs 17/-, for failing to give way to traffic approaching on the right. Alexander Newton Reid was charged with intent to defraud by falsely representing that a cheque dated May 24, 1941, and drawn on the Invercargill Savings Bank for the sum of £l6 and signed L. Bert Thomson was a good and valid order and did obtain £5 from Gladys Buchanan McDonald. The accused pleaded guilty and was admitted to probation for two years on condition that he obtained work in the country as directed by the probation officer and that he took out a prohibition order. He was ordered to make restitution of the £5 as directed by the probation officer.
