GREATER EFFORT WANTED

New Zealand’s War Production

The abandonment of the 40-hour week as a war measure was suggested in a resolution from the Lake County Council considered by the Bluff Harbour Board last night. The resolution stated that the council was convinced that existing labour legislation was retarding the war effort, production and business activities. It advocated the immediate cessation of the 40-hour week and stated that the temporary waiving of privileges was fully justified by the present circumstances. The acting Prime Minister, the Hon. W. Nash, appeared to be much inclined in the direction suggested after hearing the statements of the Australian Prime Minister, said the chairman, Mr W. J. A. McGregor. He felt that Mr Menzies had made a considerable impression in New Zealand. There was no doubt that New Zealand should do more than was possible by a 40-hour wee k. ~ „ T , Mr D. H. Cockburn said the Lake County Council took the view that the position was serious and that something should be done. FOUR HOURS EXTRA The Associated Chambers of Commerce was working on the same matter, said Mr C. B. Tapley. If four hours extra were worked on Saturday mornings there would be a tremendous increase in production. It was generally thought that New Zealand could make a greater effort, but he thought it could be left to the Government, said Mr J. Cameron. The times were abnormal and support was required for the men who had gone overseas. He felt that the suggestion would come better from the organized workers who were just as patriotic as any other section of the community. “Has any move been made by the workers?” asked Mr Tapley. Nothing had been done and it was competent for the local bodies to make a suggestion. “The man who has to do the job should have some say,” replied Mr Cameron. Sir Robert Anderson suggested that the question be held over for one month. If Mr Nash was in the humour he would make the change very soon. If nothing was done the board could bring up the matter at the next meeting- . , x . This suggestion was adopted.
