AIRMEN’S DEATH IN CRASH AT NELSON
EVIDENCE AT INQUEST
Details of the aeroplane crash at Tahunanui golf links, Nelson, on April 9, in which Aircraftman Lindo James Thomson, of Invercargill, and two othei airmen lost their lives, were given at the inquest last week. Aircraftman Thomson was a son of Mr and Mrs James Thomson, McMaster street. Evidence was given that the aircraft was gliding to the edge of the aerodrome to land. When over the golf links at a height of about 50 feet it began turning into the wind. It stalled and crashed, on to the links about 10 yards from the edge of the aerodrome and burst into flames. The crew of the aircraft were Flight Lieutenant L. M. Squire, pilot, Aircraftman Thomson and Corporal I. E. Johnson. Johnson was removed from the plane alive, but the other two could not be got out because of the intensity of the flames. Johnson did not rally and died the following day from burns and shock. The other two men died from asphyxia and shock from burns. A verdict was returned by the Coroner in accordance with the evidence.
