LUMSDEN

PLUNKET SOCIETY The annual meeting of the Lumsden District Plunket Society was held in the Plunket rooms. The president, Mrs J. Marshall, presided over delegates and visitors from Queenstown, Mossburn, Balfour, Dipton, Athol and Lumsden. After the business of the meeting was finished a social afternoon was held. Tlie opportunity was taken to make a presentation of a gold wristlet watch to Mrs J. Campbell, who has resigned the position of secretary after having held the office since the branch was first formed 12 years ago, in recognition of her splendid work. A presentation was also made to Mrs A. McAlister, who has resigned the position of treasurer after a similar term. Shoulder sprays were presented on behalf of the Lumsden members to Mrs Campbell by Mrs A. L. Upchurch (vice-president), to Mrs McAlister by Nurse L. White and to Mrs R. Wilson, who is leaving the district after holding the position of vice-presi-dent for the Balfour district since the inception of the branch, by Mrs A. Henderson. The election of officers resulted as follows: President, Mrs J. Marshall; secretary, Mrs D. Duncan; treasurer, Mrs A. L. Upchurch. Nurse White reported on the year’s work as follows: Visits to districts, Lumsden 52, Balfour 25, Dipton 25, Mossburn 24, Winton 48, Limehills 6, Queenstown 26, Arrowtown 11, Glenorchy 7, Athol 12; visits to homes, Lumsden 172, outstations 698; visits to rooms, Lumsden, adults 532, babies 408, children 124; outstations, adults 2396, babies 2035, children 794. SOCIAL EVENING A social evening was tendered Mrs J. Campbell by the combined committees of the Lumsden R.S.A. in the club rooms. Mrs Campbell has been an energetic member of the women’s committee since its inception three years ago. Mrs A. McDonald, the president, made a presentation of a shoulder spray and handbag from the Women’s Committee. Other speakers were Mesdames McKinna and Biggar and Messrs Heath, Biggar, Finnerty, Earl and Dr Bell. Item' were given by Mesdames L. G. Bell, A. Henderson and F. M. Butson (Gore), Miss L. Biggar and Mr W. Bullmore. SCHOOL COMMITTEE

The head master reported at a meeting of the Lumsden School Committee that the average attendance for the month was 117, the number on the roll being 127. Advice was received that a sum of £1 had been credited to the funds of the committee from the Post Office Savings Bank for the purchase of books or equipment for the use of the school. Apples had been received and were being supplied to the children. It was reported that a good flow of water was obtained from the well sunk in the school grounds and arrangements were made to place concrete pipes in the bottom of the well.
