BETTER FINANCIAL POSITION
SOUTH INVERCARGILL BOROUGH COUNCIL
The financial position of the borough of South Invercargill showed a decided improvement at the end of the financial year, according to a report presented to the council last night by the town clerk, Mr L. G. Kelly. The year had begun with a deficit of £350/0/9, but had ended with a credit of £l4B/14/7. The heavy traffic fees.for the year ended March 31 showed a drop of almost £2O on the previous year and under present conditions a substantial decrease could be expected in the coming year. The money expended on Kew road and the council’s portion of Elies road amounted to £39/14/5 for re-formation and £l2/9/6 for maintenance, a total of £52/3/11.
The Mayor, Mr Owen Smith, congratulated the town clerk on his report. At 'a later stage the council passed a vote of appreciation to the town clerk in recognition of his valuable services during the year. In acknowledging the vote, Mr Kelly said the council had tackled with courage the difficult task of putting its finances into a better condition. Although the council had been faced with unexpected expenditure, the financial position at the beginning of the new year was very satisfactory. As the meeting was the last for the present council, the Mayor thanked the councillors for their co-operation. He said the council had been a happy family during his term of office. He would offer himself for re-election as Mayor and. he hoped all the councillors would be returned for another term.
