Dr C. E. Beeby, Director of Education, arrived in Invercargill by the afternoon express yesterday and will spend about a week in Southland. Lieutenant George C. Israel, M.Sc., son of Mrs L. G. Israel, of Invercargill, has been appointed chemical adviser to the Army in Melbourne. He will take up his duties immediately at Army headquarters, Victoria Barracks. He is at present district gas officer at Brighton Camp, Tasmania, and lecturer in chemistry at the Hobart University. Mr L. J. Sparks, postmaster at Balfour, resumed duty yesterday after his annual leave.

Mr R. A. Cloughley, of the Riverton Post Office staff, has resumed duty as acting postmaster at Thornbury after spending two weeks in camp with the territorial forces.

Mi’ R. T. Wilson, who has been manager of the Balfour agency of Wright, Stephenson and Co., Ltd., since 1926, has been notified of his transfer to the position of manager of the Palmerston agency of the firm. Mr Wilson will be succeeded by Mr G. W. Lindley, of the Gore branch, who has been with the firm since 19.?4 and who was previously head storeman at Balfour.

Dr M. A. F. Barnett, Director of Meteorological Services, has been elected president of the Wellington branch of the Royal Society of New Zealand for the remainder of the present year, Mr F. R. Callaghan having resigned this position for health reasons. Dr Barnett is a son of Sir Louis Barnett, of Dunedin.
