RUGBY FOOTBALL

SENIOR TEAM FROM MATAURA The prospect of representative Rugby football being played by the Southland team this year was disclosed at the meeting of the Southland Rugby Union last evening. The chairman (Mr W. A. H. Oliver) reminded members of the committee that a game with an Army team was in prospect and that he would accept nominations next meeting for the office of selectors. An application was received from the Mataura Football Club for permission to enter a team in the Invercargill senior competition. It was agreed to admit the team subect to the approval of the Eastern District Sub-Union. The matter of playing games at Mataura was held over pending reception of the opinions of the city clubs whether the players would be prepared to travel to Mataura. It was stated that there were sufficient senior players in the district to make

up a good team. Mataura will have a bye on Saturday. The Borstal third grade team was promoted to second grade and the Marist Club was given permission to nlay a team in the third grade and to withdraw its second grade team. The entry of a Borstal team in the fourth grade was accepted. The following transfers were granted: J. C. Ward, Pioneer (Gore) to Pirates; R. G. Thornbury, Winton to Pirates; R. P. Gibb, Winton to Pirates; A. T. Smeaton, Ohai to Pirates; I. A. Smith, Seaward Downs to Pirates;-C. G. Smith, Morton Mains to Pirates; C. A. Sheat, Morton Mains to Pirates; J. Bourke, Collegiate to Marist; M. McKenna. Kennington to Collegiate; P. Keegan, Wellington to Marist; B. McNee, Invercargill to Old Boys; G. Thomson, Riverton to Marist; G. Bulman, Riverton to Marist; L. ’ Ward, Riverton to Marist; H. Hammond, Winton to Invercargill. Acknowledgment of a gift of 18 jerseys from the New Zealand Rugby Union was received from the superintendent of the Invercargill Borstal Institution.

Borstal, at show grounds, at 2.45 p.m. Third Grade.—Marist v. Bluff, at Bluff, at 2.30 p.m.; Star v. Invercargill, at Biggar street No. 2, at 2.30 p.m.; Makarewa v. Kennington, at Biggar street No. 1, at 3 p.m.; Pirates v. High School, at School No. 1, at 1.45 p.m.; Collegiate v. Waikiwi. at Biggar street No. 4, at 2.30 p.m. Fourth Grade.—Technical v.
