WOMEN’S HOCKEY SEASON
Competitions Begin On Saturday By ROLL IN The Southland Women’s Hockey Association began its 1941 season last Saturday with an inter-club seven-a-side tournament. There were five teams competing. Many good games resulted and they promised well for a successful season. Ex High A, with three wins, met the mixed B team in the final. Ex-High B was defeated by two goals to one in a close game, Ex-High B played one short throughout. There is quite a number of new players this season and all of them seem to be able to handle a hockey stick with ease. Both ExHigh and Invercargill show promise of being able to field full teams when the competition begins next Saturday. Technical, of course, will field a full team and, on last Saturday’s showing, will be able to produce an even better team than last year. Collegiate seems to be the only club that may not be able to field a full team, but considerable keenness is displayed by these players. The coming season may prove to be one of Southland’s most successful hockey seasons for some years, and indications point to a greatly-enlarged membership. Southland’s chances of becoming once more the premier team of New Zealand in the future look more rosy than ever before.
