Rain Developing
(Special to The Times) WELLINGTON, March 4. Following is the special weather forecast for Southland issued by the Meteorological Office, Wellington:— Moderate to strong northerly winds soon changing to westerlies. The weather fair and mild at first, but rain developing from the west with the wind change. Sea becoming rough.
The Dominion forecast is as follows:— Intermittent rain or drizzle developing in the far south-western portion of the South Island, and gradually extending after 12 to 24 hours to Westland and Southland and possibly to parts of Otago. Otherwise conditions fair to fine but with increasing cloud west of the main ranges. Temperatures mild to warm. General Situation.—An anti-cyclone, centred over the North Island, is making only slight progress eastward, but a vigorous depression is located in the south-west Tasman Sea. Winds.—Moderate northerlies to north-westerlies predominating and gradually becoming fresh to strong in exposed positions from Cook Strait south-ward. A change to strong westerlies likely in the far south after about 12 hours. Seas (New Zealand waters). —Rough at times in Cook Strait and becoming rough in Foveaux Strait. Elsewhere slight to moderate, but with a swell south of Farewell Spit. Eastern Tasman Sea.—Northerly to westerly winds, light to moderate in the northern portion with slight seas, but becoming strong in the south with rather rough seas.
The temperature was warm in Invercargill yesterday. There was a light wind from the north-east and there was bright sunshine throughout the day.
