MATAURA
MAGISTRATE’S COURT (Before Mr R. C. Abernethy, S.M.) Erie Robinson, a contractor, of Mataura, was proceeded against by the Transport Department (Mr P. Laughton) on a charge of having operated a Diesel-engined tractor along the road without registration numbers and with iron-shod wheels. The defendant, who did not appear, was fined 5/-. costs 10/-, on the first charge and £3, costs 10/-. on the second charge. John Robert Gibson, of Brydono, appeared on a charge of operating a truck without being the holder of a heavy traffic licence. The defendant entered a plea of guilty, but explained that he had sent a cheque to the Southland County Council and had not received his licence back when charged. The defendant presented his cheque butts to the Magistrate. The defendant was convicted and discharged, the Magistrate stating that he would accept the explanation given. Judgment was entered for the plaintiff by default in the following undefended civil claim: H. E. McDonald v. A. J. Lloyd (Mataura) for 18/6, costs 5/-. On a judgment summons A. J. Lloyd (Mataura) was ordered to pay J. Wilson and Sons £l/19/10 forthwith, in default two days’ imprisonment.
