CAMPING GROUND AT TE ANAU
RESERVE OF 52 ACRES AUTHORIZED CONTROL BY AUTOMOBILE ASSOCIATION (From Our Parliamentary Reporter) WELLINGTON, August 21. An area of 52 acres at Lake Te Anau is set apart as a reserve for camping purposes by a clause in the Reserves and Other Lands Disposal Bill, which was introduced in the House of Representatives this afternoon. This area is being developed as a public camping ground by the Automobile Association (Southland). It is education endowment land and formed part of a large pastoral run of about 65,000 acres. The area has recently been surrendered from the pastoral licence so that it may be made available for camping and the Education Department has agreed to its being set aside for that purpose. ' The clause declares the land to t be set aside as a reserve for camping purposes, and it is proposed later on to issue an Order-in-Council vesting control in the Automobile Association. Shelter belts and trees for beautifying purposes will be planted by the association. The site is about half a mile from the Tourist Department’s hotel at Lake Te Anau. That department has been consulted and approves of the establishment of the camping ground.
