A Diary of Sport TOURNAMENT IN DRILL HALL

Evening Basketball Next Week TWENTY-FIVE ENTRIES RECEIVED By ATTACK Twenty-five entries have been received for the evening basketball tournament to be held in the Drill Hall on July 23. There will be 16 teams competing in the senior section and nine in the junior. Although only one country team will be competing all the town clubs will be represented and the entries must be considered satisfactory. The country team that has entered is Spar Bush and it says much for the enthusiasm of the club that it has decided to send a team to Invercargill for the tournament. It is unfortunate that more country teams are not taking part, as their presence would make the tournament all the more interesting. However, the petrol restrictions have probably prevented the country teams from being well represented. The tournament will be conducted on the twolife system. The annual primary schools’ tournament will be held at Duke street on Saturday. Record entries have been received this year and 19 teams will compete in the senior section, six in the intermediate and 12 in the junior section. Games begin at 9.30 a.m. A knock-out tournament will be held in the Drill Hall if the weather is wet. Thirty teams are competing in the secondary schools’ competition this year, the games being played on Wednesday afternoons in six grades. Twelve i teams each have been entered by High School and Technical, four by St. Catherine’s and two by St. John’s. Registrations of players must be made in the proper form and those responsible should see that the full Christian names and addresses are given. Last year’s 2A teams have gone into the first grade this season and this has restricted the number’ of players available for the second grade representative team. High School and Makarewa have a number of promising players, several of whom would probably have been selected as second grade representatives. However, there is some quite good material in this season’s second grade sides and the representative team, when it is selected, should be fairly strong. L. Tinker (Wool- i worths) is one player who is almost certain to gain a place. She has shown herself to be an accurate and consistent shoot and invariably gives a good performance. TABLES OF POINTS Woodlands now has a good lead in the second grade competition and if it maintains its present form should have no difficulty in winning this grade. Makarewa gave Woodlands a keen tussle on Saturday, Woodlands winning by the odd goal. There was very little difference between the two teams. The following is the third grade table of points:— Points Ch.

Bluff A and Makarewa are the leading teams in the fourth grade and as both have the same number of points the next meeting between these teams should be very interesting. The other four teams are well behind the two leaders and have no chance of gaining grade honours. The table of points for the fourth grade is as follows:—
