DEATH OF HAROLD YOUNG IMPORTANT SUCCESSES RECALLED News was received in Christchurch on Monday of the death of Harold Young, at the age of 42 years. He was a prominent jockey for a number of years but for some time past he had not been so much in evidence. He had been a resident of Hawke’s Bay for several years and his health had not been good for some time past. About a fortnight ago he went into the Napier hospital, where he died. He served his apprenticeship with the Fordell trainer, F. Tilley, and his first important success was on Master Lupin in the Wanganui Cup, a race he won again a few years later on Client. For several years he was first horseman for the late Sir George Clifford, for whom he rode some notable winners. He was on Winning Hit in most of his successes. Among his other wins in the same colours were the Great Northern Derby, Dunedin Cup, McLean Stakes, and Dunedin Guineas on Royal Stag; Dunedin Champagne Stakes on Miss Mimic and Wild Hind; Dunedin Guineas on Long Range and Winter Wind; Canterbury Champagne Stakes on Miss Mimic and Owlscombe; and Wellesley Stakes on Moorfowl. For other owners he won the New Zealand Cup on Ardenvhor and Royal Star, Wellington Cup on Pavlova and Nobleman, and Great Autumn Handicap on Punka.
