BOWLS

ANNUAL TOURNAMENT IN CHRISTCHURCH DOMINION CONFERENCE’S DECISION (United Press Association) CHRISTCHURCH, June. 27. The New Zealand Bowling Association’s next annual tournament will be held in Christchurch. The Dominion conference decided today that play will begin on January 8, with the singles on Wednesday and Thursday, the pairs on Friday and Saturday and the rinks on the following Monday. Mr A. Rogers (Christchurch) . was appointed the official bowls tester. The annual levy will be the same as last year. Mr H. B. Oakey (Christchurch) was elected secretary. Messrs L. B. Evans (president), W. Efford (treasurer), A. Dickson, J. E. Gagliardi and Oakey will comprise the Dominion executive and with co-opted members of the Christchurch Centre they will also be the tournament comThe disappointment of bowlers who come from distant parts to compete in the Dominion tournament and who may be put out of play early under the present two-life system, was discussed by the conference. The Auckland Centre moved that the singles championship be held in sections of six, thereby giving each player five games on the first day, the two-life system then to apply. Delegates agreed that as many matches as the time allowed should be arranged for the players. The remit was lost by a small margin of votes. The following addition to No. 17 of the tournament rules was approved:— “But where an entry has been accepted from a bona fide rink, those four players may enter as two pairs, the extra pair to enter in the name, of the clyb from which the rink is originally entered.”

Moves to secure direct representation for the smaller centres were rejected. A remit from the Manawatu Association proposed that the Dominion Council be composed of one delegate from each centre. Messrs S. M. Stone (Wellington) and D. H. Thompson (North Otago) proposed and seconded the motion pro forma, both saying they opposed it. The remit was lost. Mr W. Gilbert (Wellington) suggested that a letter be sent to the centres asking if they thought the representation of one delegate for each thousand players in the centre would be satisfactory. He also recommended that a permanent secretary be engaged. Both suggestions lapsed for want of a seconder. It was decided to make a gift of £lOO to the Red Cross and it is proposed to give the championship tournament profits for patriotic purposes.

HOKONUI BOWLING CLUB COMPETITION OF ONE ROUND FAVOURED That the matter of entering two teams of four rinks or three teams of three rinks in the competition be left to the discretion of the delegates to the Eastern Sub-Centre was a decision made at the annual meeting of the Hokonui Bowling Club held in the club’s pavilion. The delegates were also instructed to support a one-round competition. Twenty-three members attended the meeting and Mr H. H. Brown was chairman in the absence of the president, Mr I. Henry. The chairman moved the adoption of the annual report and balance-sheet. He stated that various expenses that had been incurred during the year would not have to be met again this season, and the club would not be faced with a great deal of expenditure.

The report and balance-sheet were adopted. The following officers were elected:— President, Mr H. H. Brown; vice-presi-dents, Messrs W. Tretheway (senior), A. J. Clearwater (junior); treasurer, Mr W. Three new members were elected. It was decided to support the application of the Riversdale Club for affiliation with the Southland Bowling Centre.

It was left to the selectors to. select a team by January 1 to be subject to challenges from three other rinks, the matches to be played on a sectional basis, and the winning rink to be the club’s shield rink. Mr J. P. Wylie intimated that he intended to give to the club a silver cup valued at £3/3/- for competition among club members, the competition to be arranged by the committee. Mr Wylie was thanked for his offer. It was decided that rinks matches 'be held on Monday nights during the season and that the entry fee of 6d a player be given to the Patriotic Fund. In a clever display of boxing as distinguished from fighting, Cliff Hanham (Waimate) won the professional light-heavyweight boxing championship tonight by outpointing George Allen (Hastings). The men were well matched in height, weight and reach, both standing more than six feet in height. Hanham weighted 12 stone to his opponent’s 11 stone 9i pounds. Hanham owed his victory to the use of a good'left which he not only used straight to good effect, but hooked.
