THE FAR EAST
To The Editor
Sir, —Japan is now ordering us about, telling us what we are not to do in Burma, telling us to get out of Shanghai. If we yield our position will not be improved. On the contrary, the demands of ‘Japan will become more outrageous. New Zealanders will perhaps realize now the dangerous position they are in. So far we have merely been trifling. Every man and woman, every boy and girl must be prepared to fight for dear life. More than three years ago I stated that immediate conscription was necessary, that every boy and girl should be taught to shoot straight, that provisions and clothing should be stored up in not easily accessible regions. At last, before it is too late, will New Zealanders wake up and do something? What we are now doing is utterly inadequate.—Yours, etc., J. P. DAKIN. June 26, 1940.
