BASKETBALL
TOURNAMENT HELD AT GORE SUCCESSFUL FIXTURE A successful basketball tournament was conducted by the Eastern Southland Basketball Association in the Theatre Royal when men’s and women’s teams from all parts of the district participated. The women’s section was won by Ex-High 11, while Pioneer won the men’s section. Ex-High 111 won the women’s consolation and Terriers was successful in winning the men’s consolation.
At the end of play Mrs W. Archer, president of the association, presented the trophies to the winning teams and congratulated them on their success. She mentioned that another tournament would be conducted at a later date on behalf of the women’s committee of the Gore Patriotic Committee, and expressed the hope that all clubs would give their support. Results were:— WOMEN’S SECTION First Round: Ex-High II beat Riversdale I; ‘‘Bits and Pieces” beat Riversdale II; Smith’s beat Balfour; Gore I beat Ex-High III; Pukerau beat “Dead End Kids”; Ex-High I beat Gore II; McKenzie’s beat Waikaka. Second round: Ex-High II beat “Bits and Pieces”; Gore beat Pukerau; McKenzie’s beat Ex-High I. Semi-finals: Gore beat McKenzie’s; Ex-High II beat Smith’s. Final: Ex-High II beat Gore. CONSOLATION First round: Gore II beat Balfour; Riversdale I beat “Dead End Kids”; Waikaka beat Riversdale II; Ex-High 111 a bye. Second round: Gore beat Riversdale; Ex-High beat Waikaka. Final: Ex-High beat Gore. MEN’S SECTION First round: Pioneer beat Wendon; Thistle beat Riversdale; All Blacks beat Territorials; Greenfields beat Mercantile; United Trading Company beat Albion; Teddy Bears beat Terriers; Loco beat Birchwood Hunt. Second round: Pioneer beat Thistle; All Blacks beat Greenfields; United Trading Company beat Teddy Bears; Loco a bye. Semi-finals: Pioneer beat All Blacks; Loco beat United Trading Company. Final: Pioneer beat Loco. CONSOLATION First round: Riversdale beat Territorials; Terriers beat Albion; Mercantile beat Wendon. Semi-finals: Terriers beat Riversdale; Mercantile a bye. Final: Terriers beat Mercantile.
INTER-SCHOOL MATCH AT GORE
A basketball team from the Southland Girls’ High School visited Gore yesterday and played a match against a Gore High School team. The visitors won by 20 goals to 9. Because of heavy rain the game was played in the Theatre Royal.
