PORT OF BLUFF

INCREASED TONNAGE LAST MONTH MORE THAN 5000 TONS OF MEAT EXPORTED An increase of 526 tons in the cargo handled over the Bluff wharves for the month of May compared with May last year was reported by the secretary (Mr R. N. Porter) of the Bluff Harbour Board at last night’s meeting of the board.

Exports were:—Wool 2222 tons, fish 95 tons, hemp 69 tons, cheese 1984 tons, meat, frozen 5193 tons, milk products 480 tons, oats 794 tons, oat products 338 tons, pelts 231 tons, seeds 238 tons, tallow 901 tons, timber 782 tons, wheat 221 tons, sundries 1638 tons. The number of vessels working the port for the month was:—Coastal 25, overseas and intercolonial 6, total 31. The figures for the same month in 1939 were:—Coastal 38, overseas and intercolonial 11, total 49. For the first eight months of the financial year, expenditure exceeded receipts by £5204/4/10 from which could be deducted £761/17/6 being the expenditure on the new reservoir construction, a loan job, leaving a balance of £442/7/4 over receipts. The balance of receipts over expenditure for the corresponding period of last year was £1496/9/3. After deducting special items not budgeted for, the total receipts amounted to £26,769 as against estimated receipts of £26,104 for the eight months.
