OBITUARY

MR WILLIAM IZARD Mr William Izard, at one time one of the leading solicitors of Christchurch, has died at the age of 89. Born in London and educated at Basingstoke and Trinity Hall, Cambridge, Mr Izard married Miss Penfold, of Madeira, and they arrived in New Zealand on Christmas Day, 1875. After practising in Wellington for a time, Mr Izard came to Christchurch, where he went into partnership with the late Mr H. Loughnan. The partnership was entered into without any written agreement and cemented a lifelong friendship lasting more than fifty years. Largely as a result of Mr Izard s efforts, the Liedertafel was formed nearly 60 years ago. Mr Izard was tlfe possessor of a beautiful tenor voice, which he also used as a member of the Musical Union. Mr Izard was a member of the Board of Governors of Canterbury College and lectured there. He was a keen fly fisherman, and with the late Dr Moorhouse erected one of the first huts at the Selwyn. Before his death Mr Izard was the oldest living member of the Christchurch Club. Mr Izard was predeceased by three of his children —Mr W. A. Izard, a solicitor, of Wanganui, Mr B. M. Izard, of Round Top, and Mrs J. F. Poulton, of Christchurch. His wife died in 1917. The only surviving member of the family is Mrs R. T. Richards, of Sumner, where Mr Izard was living at the time of his death.
