BOMBER CRASHES INTO SEA

CREW ESCAPES WITHOUT GETTING WET (United Press Association) WHANGAREI, June 25. A Blackburn Baffin medium bomber from the Whenuapai aerodrome crashed into the sea off Onerahi this morning. Pilot Officer Mackenzie, Aircraftsmen A. A. Hodder and B. Heath escaped without even getting wet. They were able to rescue the movable gear, including the radio set and instruments and clothing, and were taken to the shore in dinghies, which quickly clustered round. It is understood that the accident was due to the aeroplane running out of petrol when it was being brought down. Pilot Officer Mackenzie made a skilful landing. The wheels, which were first to touch the water, did so gently, but the resistance provided by the water tipped the aeroplane on to its nose. At full tide the lower part of the upper wing was just above the surface of the water. The machine was apparently resting on its wheels and nose with its tail in the air. Owing to the state of the tide the extent of the damage was not ascertainable.
