NATION’S POTENTIAL MAN-POWER

HALF A MILLION MEN UNDER 60 YEARS

With the introduction of compulsory national service, it is estimated that the State has at its disposal for war purposes approximately 500,000 Europeans and 23,000 Maoris between the ages of 16 and 60. This figure is based on age distribution figures for the Dominion at April 1, 1939, as estimated by the Government Statistician. No recent figures are available to show the precise percentage of married men in each of the various age groups. In the following table, however, the third column gives a broad estimate of the married men in each class. The basis on which these proportions have been calculated is the martial status figures obtained as a result of the population census in 1936. Details
