SICK AND WOUNDED FUND CLOSES

DOMINION TOTAL NOW £460,000

WELLINGTON, June 25.

With the closing of the Queen Carnival in Auckland today the Sick, Wounded and Distress Fund appeal has officially closed, although there are several large raffles and other scheduled functions yet to be held. The total has now reached £460,000, and the Dominion organizer, Major J. Abel, expects that when the final clean-up is made the appeal will net little short of £500,000. Those who have promised regular weekly or monthly contributions may send them to the organizer, Vivian street, Wellington. Provincial totals are: Auckland, £155,000; Wellington, £105,000; Canterbury, £70,000; Otago, £53,000; Gisborne, £7000; Hawke’s Bay, £30,125; l&arlborough, £3200; Taranaki, £17,000; West Coast, £2000; Nelson, £2700. QUEEN CARNIVAL REALIZES £185,290 (United Press Association) AUCKLAND, June 25. The final contributions in the Auckland provincial Queen Carnival were paid in at an enthusiastic gathering in the Town Hall today. The competition was won by the southern queen (Mrs Gordon Matthews) with £38,746, next being the northern queen (Sister Collins) with £20,354 and the commercial travellers’ queen (Miss Purdom) with £18,863. The chairman of the civilians committee (the Hon. Eliot Davis) announced that the carnival had realized £153,712. To that would be added approximately £31,000 from the radio appeal,’ making the total £185,290.
