OBITUARY
MRS JANE SMITH A residence of nearly 80 years in the Dominion was brought to an end during the week-end with the death of Mrs Jane Smith, for some 60 years a resident of Mataura, before which she spent several years at Edendale, where her brother conducted the Edendale Hotel. Mrs Smith was brought by friends to Australia as a child, but in her 20’s crossed to the Dominion to join her brother at Edendale. Here she was married in 1879 to the late Mr James Smith, a carpenter and contractor at Mataura. The couple made this town their home. Mrs Smith was of a quiet and retiring disposition, her main outside interest being the Presbyterian Church, while her domestic life was devoted to the welfare of her family. She enjoyed remarkably good health almost to the time of her death in Dunedin, and she also retained the use of all her faculties. She is survived by a daughter, Maggie (Mrs A. G. Monk, Dunedin), and one son, James Albert (Timaru). Another daughter and son, Mrs James Pearson and Mr C. D. Smith, predeceased her.
