POPULAR RESIDENT HONOURED MR T. N. MITCHELL BIDDEN FAREWELL Mr T. N. Mitchell, who has been manager of the Bank of New Zealand at Winton for the past nine years and who has been transferred on promotion to Hokitika, was bidden farewell at a smoke concert given in his honour by residents of Winton and district. There was a large gathering present and the Mayor of Winton (Mr T. Walker) occupied the chair. In making a presentation of an inscribed silver tea and coffee service, the Mayor said that the town was unfortunate in losing Mr Mitchell. He was an associate member of the Winton Borough Council and his work for the town and district was much appreciated by the citizens. He was a member of many organizations in the town including patriotic bodies, and he had always worked wholeheartedly. The guest and his family would carry with them the best wishes of the Winton community. Mr O. A. B. Smith said that he had been associated with Mr Mitchell in business and had found the guest to be a most energetic bank manager. He wished the guest and Mrs Mitchell the best of luck.

On behalf of the Winton Agricultural and Pastoral Association, Mr H. Ross (president) said that the association was very sorry to lose Mr Mitchell.'He had helped them greatly as a member of the committee. He congratulated the guest on his appointment and wished him every success. Mr T. McGillivray, president of the Winton Jockey Club, said that Mr Mitchell had been a keen member of the club and had acted as auditor. The club greatly appreciated his services and was sorry that he was leaving the district.

Mr T. Miller, of Oreti, said that Mr Mitchell had shown great interest in the district as a whole and was very keen on farm matters.

Cordial greetings were conveyed to Mr Mitchell by Mr W. Brandford, on behalf of the Southland Acclimatization Society. Mr Brandford said that a minute of appreciation had been recorded of Mr Mitchell’s work for the society. Other speakers were Dr P. Gow, Messrs H. R. Beale, R. B; Wilson, W. G. Clark, R. S. Balch, J. T. Shaw, R. Pearce, L. G. de la Perrelle, R. King, G. Lindsay, F. Moore, P. A. Blyth, J. R. Todd, G. W. Walters and F. Tilley. Mr Mitchell replied. A toast list was honoured as follows: Commercial and Agricultural and Pastoral Interests (proposed by Mr J. T.

Shaw and responded to by Messrs H. Ross, R. King and R. B. Wilson), Soldiers and Allies (Mr H. R. Beale— Messrs T. McGillivray and T. Miller). Items were given during the evening by Messrs R. Mitchell, G. Lindsay, W. Brandford and L. G. de la Perrelle. The accompanists were Messrs F. Tilley and W. Wilson. During his nine years’ residence in Winton Mr Mitchell took a keen interest in many local institutions. He served on the executive of the Returned Soldiers’ Association and _ was also an associate member of the Winton Borough Council for several years. He was a member of the Central Bowling Club, the Winton Golf Club and the Winton Agricultural and Pastoral Association. Since the outbreak of war Mr Mitchell took a leading part in patriotic efforts at Winton and was a member of the Winton Patriotic Committee. Mrs Mitchell, also took an active interest in patriotic work. Mr Mitchell left Winton yesterday for Hokitika. PERSONAL Private M. Metzger, of Bumham military camp, is spending a few days’ leave at Winton with his parents, Mr and Mrs N. Metzger.
