Rules For Basketball Tournament

By

Seventy entries have now been received for the King’s Birthday basketball tournament to be held in Invercargill on Monday. When the entries actually closed only 52 teams had entered, but since then the Menzies SubAssociation has submitted a number of entries. The entry of 70 can be considered quite satisfactory in the circumstances. At the King’s Birthday tournament in past, years one grade has usually played in the Drill Hall, but this year there will be no play, in the Drill Hall. Instead, the Waihopai school court, which is much more convenient, will be used. Another appeal is made for country referees to assist at the tournament and those Who are willing to do so should report to Mr Kinross or Miss Watson, the secretary, on their arrival at the Duke street courts. Players are asked to bear in mind the following points:— The first-named team has the ball; the other side the choice of ends. Each team will provide a ball. Play will be for seven minutes each way and there will be no interval. Teams are reminded that they must be prompt as the draw does not allow of delays. Teams may consist of 12 players, any nine of whom may play in a match. Team captains must register their 12 players on arrival at the courts—Miss Watson, the secretary, has the team slips. No jewellery is to be worn; it may be left with the secretary. Girls must be careful not to leave any rubbish lying about the grounds. Mrs Gavan will be in charge of the first aid and girls must be guided by her.

The Protest Committee, consisting of Mr Kinross, Miss Basstian and the

secretary, will act in the case of any dispute. The entry fee of 6d will be payable at the gate as this provides a better check. The entries for the referees’ examination close on June 15 and the examination will be held on July 11 at 7 p.m. HIGH SCHOOL’S PERFORMANCE The weekly competition games were played in fine weather on Saturday. In the senior grade St. Mary’s had a narrow win over High School, the latter team giving a very promising exhibition. St. Mary’s was without the services of M. McGrath and as she is without a doubt the most accurate shoot the team possesses her absence naturally made a difference. However, as the game progressed the team’s form improved, although it was hard pressed by High School near the end. - After throwing the ball, players must step straight into the court. They should not wander along the line and then step in several feet away from the spot where the ball was thrown in. Some players are lax abouf this rule and enter the court on an angle. The rules state that the thrower-in shall immediately re-enter the court at the spot where the ball went out of bounds. Players should stand still when throwing the ball in. Players can give their teams an unfair advantage by throwing in. very quickly and while still running. A player must not go out of the court unnecessarily. Players have sometimes been observed off the' court while the opposing team was in possession of the ball. All players should stay on the court unless they are throwing in or retrieving a ball.

Coming Bowler Likely to replace E. Christensen as the most promising left-aim bowler Taranaki has possessed in years is R. Urry, who achieved considerable distinction in the colts’ match against Auckland the other day. Urry, who possesses a high, rhythmical action and has the ability to turn the ball back sharply, took seven wickets for 41 in Auckland’s first innings. Christensen, incidentally, appears to have played only at intervals during the past two seasons. Some years back, when he was a regular member of Wellington country teams, he showed outstanding promise.
