CUT IN AUSTRALIAN NEWSPRINT
PAPERS TO BE REDUCED IN SIZE (Received May 28, 10.30 p.m.) CANBERRA, May 28. The Minister of Customs (Senator George McLeay) announced that the rationing of newsprint will begin in Australia on July 1. The plan agreed t- will cut the consumption by 54,000 tons and result in a saving of more than £1,000,000 of non-sterling exchange. Daily papers exceeding 72 pages a week will be subjected to a 35 per cent, reduction. Sunday papers exceeding between 24 and 32 pages will be reduced by 25 per cent, papers exceeding between 32 and 48 pages 30 per cent, and papers exceeding 48 pages a 35 per cent, reduction.
